ideal reader

The ideal reader is a fictional persona representing the specific individual who will fall in love with your writing and become a loyal fan of all your work. Identifying this person helps you write with purpose—tailoring your plot pacing, tone, and formatting to suit exactly what they are looking for. Rather than trying to write for “everyone”—which often results in a vague, disconnected message—pinpointing your ideal reader provides a clear target for both your storytelling and your marketing.

Developing a solid profile for your ideal reader requires looking beyond basic categories (like age and gender) to focus on their emotions, habits, and preferences:

Demographics: Their age, occupation, education level, and household income.

Psychographics: Their core values, hobbies, and the specific desires, fears, or goals they hold.

Pain Points: What problem do they need solved? What negative feelings (e.g., overwhelm, frustration, anxiety) are they trying to alleviate?

Content Habits: What platforms do they use to find answers? Do they prefer reading physical books, listening to audiobooks, or browsing blogs?
